Vocational Education and Training

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is education focused on practical, job-ready skills for a specific trade, craft, or occupation, as distinct from the more general, theory-first pathway of higher education. In Australia, VET is delivered through Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) — including TAFEs and private providers — which offer nationally recognised qualifications ranging from short skill-set courses through to advanced diplomas, covering industries from construction and hospitality to aged care, IT, and business administration.

Australia’s VET sector operates under a national quality framework, with RTOs required to meet defined Standards covering areas like training and assessment practices, learner support, and governance in order to maintain their registration and continue delivering nationally recognised training.
