Quantitative Research

Quantitative research is an approach concerned with measurement, numerical data, and statistical analysis, typically aiming to test relationships between variables, measure the scale of a phenomenon, or produce findings that can be generalised beyond the specific sample studied. It usually asks questions about how much, how many, or whether a measurable relationship exists between variables.

Common data sources and methods

  • Surveys and questionnaires — structured instruments producing numerical or categorical data across a sample
  • Experiments — controlled studies testing the effect of manipulating one variable on another
  • Existing numerical data — administrative records, statistics, or other pre-collected quantitative data analysed for patterns
  • Structured observation — counting or measuring predefined variables, as opposed to open-ended qualitative observation

Analysis

Quantitative data is analysed statistically — through descriptive statistics (summarising a data set) and inferential statistics (testing whether patterns observed in a sample likely reflect a broader population), producing measurable, often generalisable results rather than interpretive themes.

Comparative

Quantitative research is often contrasted with Qualitative research which prioritises meaning and experience over measurement. The two are frequently combined as mixed methods within a single study, and quantitative measures can also play a supporting role within otherwise qualitative, participatory approaches like Action Research — for example, measuring outcomes before and after an intervention alongside qualitative reflection.
