Vocational Education and Training

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is education focused on practical, job-ready skills for a specific trade, craft, or occupation, as distinct from the more general, theory-first pathway of higher education. In Australia, VET is delivered through Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)- including TAFEs and private providers; which offer nationally recognised qualifications ranging from short skill-set courses through to advanced diplomas, covering industries from construction and hospitality to aged care, IT, and business administration.

Our VET sector operates under a national quality framework, with RTOs required to meet defined Standards covering areas like training and assessment practices, learner support, and governance in order to maintain their registration and continue delivering nationally recognised training. Qualifications sit within the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), and most training is delivered against nationally endorsed training packages — units of competency and qualifications developed with industry input so that a Certificate III or Diploma means broadly the same thing regardless of which RTO issued it.

RTOs are regulated at the national level by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) , who are powered with audit powers to ensure compliance against the RTO Standards 2025. ASQA have the power to force RTOs to rectify training products, procedure, governance and any other area of compliance against these standards. ASQA can revoke the RTO status of a non compliant RTO.

Position in this vault

I work as a senior educator in the field of Vocational Education at Canberra Institute of Technology. Good quality, evidence based public vocational education is a passion of mine — not only does it give job ready skills, it so often supports and empowers learners that education has not worked for in the past. Over my 16 years as an educator I have seen many stories of recovery and empowerment that started with a TAFE enrolment and not much else.
